about
I wrote the song after being released from the psych hospital after a mental health emergency. Lying in bed with an old friend a few weeks later, the line came into my mind "I can't love you right now but I want to learn how". I carried that line around with me for a few days, Mulling it over in my mind. I thought about how for so long I'd been searching for love or a relationship and have been unable to find it and now that it seemed more available, I wasn't ready to accept it. Then I began to think about how there are so many other kinds of love in our life that get pushed aside in the quest for romantic love. I thought about my mother's china collection that we never use and it all came together to make this song.
lyrics
I can't love you right now
But I want to learn how
I've got a lot to learn and unlearn
A lot of bad feelings to turn around
I've been hiding out from myself
From everybody else
I've got love in my life
But we hide it behind glass
Like the china we don't use
Grasping to be a sister and a daughter
Don't think I could be a lover too
Even for you
Even for you
Can't be me right now
Don't remember how
Faded photos, eggshell walls
Are the only proof of all I used to be
Sweet voices comfort me
But they're so hard to reach
Will I ever get my peace
Will I get my peace
I need some peace
I've got love in my life
But we hide it behind glass
Like the china we don't use
Grasping to be a sister and a daughter
Don't think I could be a lover too
Even for you
Even for you
Even for you
Even for you
I never loved just right
Done it wrong my whole life
Even with you
Even with you
I'm hardly home in this body
It is not a safe place to be
Even for me
Even for me
I've got love in my life
But we hide it behind glass
Like the china we don't use
Grasping to be a sister and a daughter
Don't think I could be a lover too
Even for you
Even for you
Even for you
Even for you
